I know people may say this all the time, but I really have learned a lot about myself on this journey toward a better me. When I found the best Fairfax Personal Trainer, for women I was completely out of shape, had a few medical issues and was not eating healthy. But when I started, I was ready for a change. I started out doing strictly boot camp classes and definitely benefited from them- I started to drop inches and a little bit of weight and my clothes were starting to get big. I was faithful with my workouts- going three times a week- but started to hit a plateau. No matter how hard or how many times I worked out, my weight was not dropping as much or as quickly as I thought it would. I asked for some guidance on what I can do to get some results. This is what I have learned:
1) You have to change your diet if you want to see weight loss.
I have always known that diet is an important factor if you want to lose weight, but I stubbornly pushed that out of my mind and convinced myself that exercise alone was enough. It wasn’t until we had a 21 day nutrition challenge at the gym that I had finally took control of what I was eating and guess what? It worked. I have realized that I can workout every day if I wanted to, but the only way I will see a drop in pounds is if I eat the right things.
2) There really is such a thing as “skinny fat”.
In my 20s, I was inspired by a friend to try running. Up to that point, I disliked the idea of running. I heard of the benefits of it, but honestly thought, what was the point and how can this be fun? But this friend of mine began to run to improve her health and I saw the positive changes it was making for her. Everything about her was happy and healthy- the elusive “runner’s high” seemed to affect her even when she wasn’t running. So I gave it a try and ended up actually enjoying it. I signed up for a half marathon and began training. I was liking the changes my body was going through, but looking back on that experience, I realize now that I had no muscle tone and all the parts of my body that I wanted to tighten was still flabby. I was indeed “skinny fat”. But since I have been working with the Fairfax Personal Trainer, I am seeing muscle and those flabby parts of my body are starting to look firm.
3) Having the right form, especially when working out with weights, makes a huge difference.
As much as I love the challenge of the boot camp classes, it was time for me to change up my routine. With the help of my awesome trainers, I got into personal training. I have had personal training sessions from other places before, but it wasn’t until I started working with these trainers that I was taught the proper form and technique for various exercises. Although there is always room for improvement on technique, I now have the basic information on what I need to watch to prevent injury and see significant changes in my shape.
4) There is no such thing as a quick fix.
I have done my fair share of crash diets- liquid diets, pills, eating 1 meal a day, etc. Through the coaching the trainers have provided, I have accumulated the correct information on what I should be eating and how much I need to exercise to see results. I constantly remind myself that this is not going to be easy. I am only human- and by no means perfect. Some days are harder than others, but all in all I love this journey that I am on and am looking forward to the benefits- stable blood sugar, high energy levels, etc.- proper nutrition will have on my overall health.
