Beating The Blues With Exercise

Exercise is a great way to beat depression and anxiety. The link between exercise and mood change is tremendous; working out will boost your mood.

Not only does exercise have physical benefits, such as lowered blood pressure, but it also has mental health benefits, resulting in a positive mood. Moderate exercise (walking, swimming, and bicycling) for a minimum of 30 minutes, three or four times a week will produce good results. People experience less stress on their muscles and joints when they exercise regularly. Muscles that are conditioned recover faster post workout.

Simple relaxation techniques and exercising can allow us to take control of our lives. Become aware of what causes stress and use techniques, such as deep breathing. Our bodies first reaction to stress is short, shallow breathing. Another relaxation technique to relieve you from stress would be “clearing your mind.” Give yourself a mental break to relax your body. Rid yourself of stressful thoughts and just take a quiet walk around the block, go somewhere that will clear your mind. You’ll be surprised with the new amount of energy received.

Inactivity and weaker muscles causes muscle and joint aches and pain, not aging. Our bodies pay the price of long hours at work. Walking is one of the best exercises, and helps the circulation of blood throughout the body. Such things as aerobics, swimming, and jogging have a direct positive effect on our feeling of health. Exercise helps ease anxiety and lift spirits.
